ART THERAPY QUILT

2024

paint, tape, candy wrappers, trash, stickers, cereal boxes

10 x 11 feet

A mass of free and thrifted substrate compulsively decorated and collaged during a time when I couldn't afford to eat much more than cereal and what was available at the PSU Food Pantry.

Prior to installing in the basement of the PSU Art Building, my tiny studio apartment walls were blanketed in this ever growing quilt. Letters, therapy notes, tarot readings, and street findings were rehomed between mid century cake decorating pages and graffiti practice test sheets. Nothing in particular, a distraction and meditation practice in tandem, playing, and experimenting, anything to lower my heart rate and panic.

This practice evolved into a collaboration that turned into a second quilt that I presented for my BFA thesis suggesting community art making was a worth while endeavor. This collaborator and I have since parted ways, and for privacy and self care reasons this person will not be named, nor will their contributions be highlighted.
